Incoterms & Shipping for Footwear Imports: FOB, CIF, DDP

FOB, CIF, and DDP explained for footwear importers: who pays freight and risk, and how to choose the right Incoterm for your first order.

Incoterms decide who pays freight, insurance, and where risk transfers in an international shoe shipment. Get them wrong and you either overpay or absorb a customs surprise. This is the importer’s plain-English guide to FOB, CIF, and DDP.

FOB: you control freight

Under FOB (Free On Board) the seller delivers goods loaded on the vessel at the origin port; risk and cost transfer to you there. You book and control ocean freight, which usually saves money once you have a freight forwarder. Best for buyers with logistics set up.

CIF: seller includes freight

Under CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) the seller pays freight and insurance to the destination port. Simpler for the buyer, but you pay the seller’s freight margin and have less control. Good for first orders while you build logistics.

DDP: door-to-door, seller clears customs

Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) the seller handles everything to your door, including import duty and customs clearance. Easiest for the buyer but most expensive and requires the seller to manage your country’s import rules. Use it to test a market.

Which to choose

Term Freight payer Customs Buyer control
FOB Buyer Buyer Highest
CIF Seller Buyer Medium
DDP Seller Seller Lowest

New importers often start CIF or DDP, then move to FOB as they gain volume and a forwarder.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FOB and CIF?

FOB: the seller loads goods on the ship and you take over freight and risk from the origin port. CIF: the seller pays freight and insurance to the destination port; simpler but less control.

Is DDP worth the extra cost?

For testing a market or if you lack import infrastructure, DDP is worth it — the seller clears customs and delivers to your door, removing surprises.

Which Incoterm should a first order use?

CIF or DDP for the first order to keep logistics simple; switch to FOB once you have a freight forwarder and volume to control costs.
